Foremost has been in the industry since 1952, starting out when a group of individuals had a novel idea of insuring mobile homes. The venture that started in Grand Rapids, Michigan quickly grew and after five years it was already doing business in 35 states. By the 1960s came, the company had written over one million insurance policies and its Mobilowners Mobile Home program has been the number one choice of mobile homeowners. It was also in this decade that the company introduced its first policy designed for travel trailers and added motor homes to its product line up.

In 1972, Foremost went public and expanded its offerings that included boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and automobile insurance. By 1989, Foremost was able to earn the endorsement of AARP to offer its members mobile home insurance. In 2000, Foremost was purchased by Farmers Insurance Group of Companies. It was also in this period that the company began offering motorcycles and off-road vehicle insurance, continuing to expand and offering coverage for personal watercraft and collectible auto. In 2004, Foremost was once again endorsed by AARP to offer its members motorcycle insurance.

As of late, Foremost has a wide range of products for property and casualty insurance covering auto, home, umbrella, manufactured home, motor home, travel trailer, landlord and rental properties, motorcycles, boat and personal watercraft.

Today, the company is led by president Steven Boshoven, Corporate Communications manager Amy Peterson and Communications director John Kalinka. It is represented by more than 38,000 independent agencies and is licensed to operate in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Its head office is located at the Farmer’s offices in Caledonia, Michigan where 1,900 people are working. Foremost now has more than 2.7 million active policyholders. It is endorsed by the Great Lakes Boating Federation, Escapees RV Club, See-Doo boats and personal crafts, Ski-Doo snowmobiles, and Cam-Spyder Roadster  as its preferred carrier. Currently, Foremoest is the insurance provider for Ducati, North America through its Ducati Foremost Insurance Program. The company has been rated A (Excellent) by  A.M. Best Ratings.
