In the last 100 years, Grinnell has maintained and valued its relationship with its customers, providing them with protection, security, and stability.
Grinnell Mutual traces its roots back to the mid-1800s as settlers transferred to the Midwest. At the start of the new century, members of the Iowa State Association of Mutual Insurance Companies realized the need of a reinsurance organization specifically for country mutuals. Seven of its members decided to create the Iowa Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Association which became the first organization dedicated to the reinsurance of farm mutuals in the Uinted States. Its office was located in Grinnell, Iowa.
And from the one-man office that was established in 1909. the company had grown to the present 700-person office located in the same place where it was founded.
Grinnell Mutual operates in 12 states that include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. It is now partnering and reinsuring 295 farm mutual members. It is North America’s largest primary insurer of farm mutual companies. And for the last 20 years, Grinnell has had received an A rating from A.M. Best. In the 2008 fiscal year, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company posted total sales of $306.8 million. Through its local agents, it provides direct lines of insurance to protect its member’s farms, homes, vehicles, and business properties.
The company is led today by chairman Michael Fordryce, president and chief operating officer Steven Crawfords, and vice president/chief financial officer/treasurer Jerry Woods. It currently has 13,000 independent agents selling its products.
The Grinnell Mutual Group reinsures around 280 smaller farm mutual companies in the Midwest. Grinnell also has basic insurance coverage that includes commercial and personal auto, liability, homeowners, and worker’s compensation.
For its reinsurance programs, policyholders can tailor their own plan based on their company’s specific need. They can choose from a wide range of options that include occurrence, annual aggregate, catastrophe, facultative reinsurance, and package coverage. For its commercial insurance, Grinnell has customized coverage for the following types of business: agri-commodities, auto part stores, barber and beauty shops, clothing stores, commercial properties, contractors, convenience stores, florist, funeral homes, golf courses, houses of worship, mini-warehouses, photographers and videographers, restaurants and pizzerias, and veterinarians.
For its home insurance, Grinnell provides plans for those who need homeowners insurance for their mobile homes, renters insurance, and for permanent dwelling. Grinnell also has coverage for its members’ treasured items, like jewelry and artworks. It also has the Identity Theft 911 service with out any extra cost.
