Pennsylvania National Insurance Company sells property-casualty insurance including business, personal auto, homeowners, umbrella, and surety bonds through independent agents in nine states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama (personal auto, homeowners, and personal umbrella insurance are not available in Delaware, South Carolina and Alabama). The company sells through more than 750 independent insurance agencies.
Pennsylvania National ranks 102nd out of more than 1,000 property-casualty insurance companies in the United States, with assets exceeding $1.3 billion and premium writings exceeding $500 million. A.M. Best, the leading rating organization for property-casualty insurance industry, affirms the company’s rating of A- or excellent as of 2009.
Founded in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1919, the company was established by a farmer’s association to supply farm-related workers’ compensation insurance to its members. The association enlarged its business by expanding into several other lines and several other states within a few years. At present, the company changed from an agricultural focus to an industrial focus and a service-economy focus. It remains a mutual insurance company, operating for the benefit of its policyholders.

For its umbrella program available in 23 states, the options exclusive to this program are the personal umbrella coverage, employment practices liability, blanket protection for most risks, and flexibility to tailor an excess program to meet the more complex needs of a larger agency. It provides affordable coverage and flexible pay plans. Clients can get coverage up $10 million for commercial and errors plus omissions and $5 million for personal exposures of owners and officers.
The company also offers group program business solutions to help its agents beneficially write small and medium commercial accounts in a progressively competitive market. It builds programs around businesses such as local chambers of commerce, printers trade groups, contracting trade associations, and beverage distributors. In addition, Pennsylvania National provides personal insurance consisting of personal automobile insurance, homeowners, renters, dwelling fire, umbrella liability, boat, replacement cost auto, and auto loans or lease coverage. Its surety department offers three major bond products which are the contract bonds, all major classes of commercial bonds, and fidelity bonds.
